Bulgogi

I love the Olympics.  They are an opportunity for people to come together and cheer on their countries, while also getting a glimpse into other cultures. This year's games in Pyeongchang,  gave me a hankering for some Korean food.  Since I am not familiar with Korean cuisine, I illicited the help of a friend of mine who is from Korea.  I asked her for the recipe to an authentic, yet simple dish.  She provided me with this recipe for Bulgogi, which means "fire meat," which by the way, relates to the way it is cooked, not it's spiciness.  

1/2 cup crushed pear

1/4 cup onion, pureed

4 cloves minced garlic

1 tsp minced ginger

1 chopped green onion*

2 Tbsp soy sauce

2 Tbs brown sugar

1 Tbsp toasted sesame oil

several thin slices carrots

Sirloin beef, thinly sliced** 

Salt and pepper to taste

Mix all ingredients in a bowl.  Add the meat and coat well. Let the meat marinate in the refrigerator for a half hour or overnight. Grill, fry or BBQ. Serve over rice.

* I used 3 scallions because I like a little more onion flavour.

**You can use any kind of beef, as long as it is sliced very thin.
